DNA Tests

Boomer's Test

Boomer was a 42 lb dog. We thought he was a corgi/terrier mix. According to this, we were very wrong. We even got the test done twice by two different companies. Somewhere in this little white doggy is Mastiff, Keeshond, German Shepherd and Basenji. About the only one we can possibly see is Basenji. How many dogs got together to make our little one-of-a-kind Boomer?

Tippy's Test

We thought Tippy was a Border Collie or Smooth-Coat Collie mixed with either Saluki or Coon Hound. As with her brother--we were very wrong. The surprising part of her mix is the Miniature Pinscher. We knew she had some big dog in her (she's about 65 lbs), but I suppose the Min-Pin would explain her “not-so-smart” little brain.

For $60 we were able to get a DNA test done on each of the dogs to find out what they were mixed with.  The results couldn’t have been further from what we thought they were by looking at them.  We love Super Mutts!

The following is from DDC, the testing company:

The breeds listed on the certificate indicate those that were detected in your dog. They are reported as 5 possible levels to help you understand which breeds are more prevalent in your dog. A current list of the possible breeds detected by this test can be found at our website, www.vetdnacenter.com.

Level 1: Over 75% of the DNA found in your dog is contributed from the breed listed

Level 2: Each breed listed contributed 37-74% of your dog's DNA composition

Level 3: Each breed listed contributed 20-36% of your dog's DNA composition

Level 4: Each breed listed contributed 10-19% of your dog's DNA composition

Level 5: Each breed listed contributed less than 10% of your dog's DNA composition

This means there isn’t one dog breed that makes up over 36% of either dog’s mix!
